Demystifying Power Bank Tech: What Terms Like PD, GaN, and mAh Really Mean for You

Shopping for a power bank in the EU market can feel like deciphering a tech alphabet soup: PD, QC, GaN, mAh, Wh. These specs plastered on product pages aren't just jargon—they are the direct blueprint of the device's performance, safety, and convenience. Understanding them is the key to making an informed purchase that truly fits your needs.

Let's break down the essential terms.

The Core: Capacity (mAh vs. Wh)

  • mAh (milliampere-hour): This is the most common rating, indicating the battery's charge capacity. A 10,000mAh power bank has more "fuel" than a 5,000mAh one. However, it doesn't account for voltage, so it's an imperfect comparison between different devices.

  • Wh (Watt-hour): A more accurate and universal measure of energy capacity, used for airline compliance. EU regulations often require stating Wh. You can roughly calculate it: Wh = (mAh × Voltage) / 1000. For air travel, power banks under 100Wh can typically be carried in hand luggage without approval.

The Game-Changer: Fast Charging Protocols
This determines how fast energy is transferred.

  • USB Power Delivery (PD): The modern, universal standard. It's a smart protocol that negotiates the optimal high speed and power (up to 240W) between the power bank and the device. Essential for fast-charging modern smartphones, tablets, and especially laptops. Look for "PD 3.0" or higher.

  • Quick Charge (QC): A proprietary standard primarily from Qualcomm, still common on many devices. Good, but PD is becoming the dominant and more versatile standard. Some power banks support both.
